In old Japan, the Chindonya band was a most unique and entertaining form of advertising. These wild musical bands of extremely skilled, outrageously costumed, comic musicians were hired by shop owners to hit the streets and literally drum up business. Improvising festive music, beating drums and gongs, playing woodwinds or brass intruments they handed out flyers to all passersby.
