Never afraid to push the boundaries in the taiko drumming world, Somei Yoshino Taiko Ensemble (SYTE) brings its signature style of performance to ODC Theater with its newest full length work entitled “Time Cocoon.” Prepare to focus your eyes into the magnifying glass through time and space as you enter the peculiar world of insects. Using a wide palette of world instruments including Japanese taiko, shamisen and bamboo flute, SYTE imaginatively dissects the complex and sometimes bizarre microcosm of distinct cycles of birth, death and transformation.
Their music is “at times elegant and subtle, at times spare and simple, at other times complex, multi-layered … a live performance is even richer and more nuanced and exposes the full beauty of their arrangements and choreography, visuals and props, movement and expression.”
“Well known for pulling out all the stops, theirs is a complete theatrical event from start to finish --- the SYTE artists literally flow through the performance, hailed by audiences as thrilling, dynamic and visually stunning.”
"TEN" Somei Yoshino Taiko Ensemble DVD
SYTE's sold-out 10th Anniversary Concert filmed this year at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts MainStage. This live performance captures the artistic style that has become SYTE’s innovative trademark, guiding their audiences through subtle, melodic flows to flights of wacky comedy and then to driving heights of percussive feats.
Special bonus track “Reflections” is a personal, behind-the-scenes look at the creation of SYTE in the words of their four members and a visual montage of images from the first ten years.
